What we check in Tanzania
| Check | Where the record is held |
|---|---|
| Company existence, directors, shareholders | BRELA |
| Beneficial owners | BRELA beneficial-ownership filings, where available |
| Mining, dealer or broker licence | Mining Commission and its online cadastre |
| Export permit, royalty and inspection records | Mining Commission, for the consignment |
| Tax registration | Tanzania Revenue Authority, where it confirms |
| Physical existence and grade of the lot | Our own inspection and testing |
Local points that change the answer
- Dealers must offer a share of their gold to the Bank of Tanzania through the refineries, which affects how much of a lot is free for export.
- Artisanal gold is meant to pass through the government’s mineral markets and buying centres; a lot with no market record needs explaining.
- A broker’s licence permits arranging sales, not holding stock; a broker offering its own gold should be asked whose gold it is.
How the engagement runs
- Brief — the supplier’s name and the documents it has given you, through the Due Diligence form.
- Scope — we confirm the scope under the Nairank Global Standard, the timetable and the fee for work in Tanzania.
- Records — company and licence records obtained from the registry and the licensing authority; documents confirmed with their issuers.
- Field work — where in scope, inspection of the site or warehouse and testing of the material by our own personnel.
- Screening — company, directors and owners screened against sanctions, PEP and adverse-media sources.
- Report — each finding with its evidence and a recommendation.
